Natalya Butakova, Business Development Director at AP Companies International Medical Assistance Services:
─ Every year, the number of foreigners arriving in Russia, either to work under contract or to open their own businesses, increases. And each of them, in turn, requires medical services. In my experience, one can say that for foreigners in Russia, receiving quality medical assistance is more complicated than in their home countries. There are factors such as the language barrier, the high demand for services, as well as something as commonplace as being unaware of good medical establishments. The approaches both to medical organisations and to the way medical assistance is provided are markedly different in the West than they are in Russia.
There are clinics for foreigners in every country. In Russia, there are such establishments in two cities only: Moscow and St. Petersburg. In Moscow, at present, there are five so-called western-orientated clinics in total. In St. Petersburg there are four. The main differences with these medical establishments are that the majority of staff speak English, and that the organisational approach to medical help, indeed the logistics of documentation and billing, and even the patients themselves, are closer to international norms; the service is on a higher level, the décor is more elegant, and so on. Of course, with this, the cost for service in such establishments is higher than in clinics geared towards local residents.
Standard services include: the availability of 24 hour medical assistance (at the clinic, at home, or in the office); a leading doctor treating the whole family and with a good knowledge of the patients’ medical history; a personal manager attached to the expat’s employing company and to each client personally. We really hope that in the future the number of medical institutions with a Western level of service in Russia will only increase.
